Outsourcing Your IT
If your computers are down, your business is down. That's why more companies are turning to outside experts to manage some or all of their IT requirements.
The main reason companies outsource is reliability. For companies that depend heavily on their systems, reliability is critical. Knowing that everything will always be up and running gives them peace of mind they are willing to pay for.
Another reason is cost. While it can be pricey to outsource, it's often even more expensive for a company to buy and maintain its own hardware and pay for an in-house IT department to keep it current. Outsourcing ensures that systems are state-of-the art, and that back-ups and contingencies are taken care of.
Outsourcing services range from simple network and computer support to a fully outsourced IT department. Starting with a few outsourced services, like security and maintenance, is a good way to get a feel for how the arrangement might work.
Before selecting an IT partner
Look for fit. Meet with a few vendors and get a feel for how they work. Are they responsive? Flexible? Do they understand your issues and concerns?
Ask about expertise. If your business uses industry-specific programs, does the vendor know how to work with them? Are they experienced with what you have or need?
Check references. Be sure to talk to several of the vendor's current clients to gauge their satisfaction level. Ask what they like and don't like about working with the vendor.
Technology changes fast, and keeping up can be difficult. Sometimes it's best to trust IT to an outside resource so you and your team can focus on your core business.
